In the year 2011, EMD rebuilt a group of SD40-2s and GP38-2s to meet today's locomotive standards. They where rebuilt from #2s to #3s and are highly efficient. CSX bought the first models of the locomotives and they are now used all over the United States. The GP38-3s are primarily used for shunting operations in CSX yards in the Northern United States. The SD40-3s are used as road engines for CSX and both have proven to be highly successful. CSX hopes to replace all of their old #2 units and replace them with #3s in the near future.

They both still operate at 3000hp but have been modified to consume less diesel so they are more environmentally friendly. They GP38-3 has a built in RC (remote controlled) system inside so that it can be contolled with no-one inside. They both also have upgraded computer systems and braking systems to meet today's standards. The cabs have been upgraded with two digital monitors that replace the use for gauges, making them easier to use. A new braking system was installed that makes the locomotive's e-brake within 5 seconds when passing a red signal.

If these locomotives are added to Train Simulator 2015, it would be nice if they where added in a bundle with both of them in CSX YN3B (box car logo) livery. The horns are are exactly the same on both locomotives and they have been upgraded with electric bells, like the ones on the ES44DC. They should come with scenarios for NEC: New York-New Haven route addon. Some CSX steel coil cars, CSX 60ft gondolas, and CSX 4 chute cement hoppers. Lastey The engine sounds of the two locomotives are similar to the sd40-2 but with a little more bass to them.
